According to Press TV’s Public Relations Office, the documentary traces the historical roots of tensions between Iran and the West, from Alexander the Great’s invasion of Persia to the 1953 coup against the government of Mohammad Mossadegh and more recent events, highlighting the impact of foreign interventions on the country’s political developments.

Revisiting the 1953 coup and the role of US and British intelligence agencies in overthrowing Mossadegh’s government and restoring Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi to power, Iran: The Great Game also touches on the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Offering a different perspective on the history of Iran’s relations with the West, the film examines the role of global powers in shaping the country’s political landscape and the consequences of political and geopolitical rivalries.

Another section of the documentary focuses on the downing of Ukrainian passenger flight PS752 in January 2020, which claimed the lives of all 176 people on board. Set against the backdrop of tensions between Iran and the United States, the incident raises questions about the human cost of political and military crises. The film also stresses the need to avoid war and draw lessons from history to prevent past crises from recurring.

Among those featured in the documentary are Oliver Stone, Jeffrey Sachs, Pepe Escobar, Mohammad Javad Larijani, and Seyed Mohammad Marandi.

Iran: The Great Game will air on Press TV on Sunday, October 11, at 05:30 and 16:30 GMT.
