The city has been mentioned in the writings of Naser Khosrow under the names "Bast" or "Basht."
Basht is located 110 kilometers from Yasuj, the capital of Kohgiluyeh and Boyerahmad. Most of its population belongs to a branch of the Lur ethnic group known as the "Bavi tribe" (Ill in Persian). They speak the Lori language.
