Speaking at the World Food Day conference on Monday, Mousa Ghavidel said Hormozgan’s fishing community plays a vital role in the country’s food security, with the Persian Gulf providing a significant share of its seafood protein.
However, he added that the province’s fishermen have faced widespread challenges in recent months due to wartime conditions, climate change, and security threats.
He said that 420 fishing boats and 70 fishing vessels had been destroyed during the recently imposed war by the United States and the Israeli regime. In addition, 15 fishermen had been killed and 11 injured.
Damage to fishing ports and piers, along with oil pollution caused by the war, has also affected fishing grounds and marine habitats, he added.
