Bitcoin Falls Below $81,000: What Shook the Cryptocurrency Market?

NOURNEWS – Bitcoin’s decline below $81,000 amid mounting geopolitical concerns over the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb, rising oil prices, climbing US Treasury yields and growing expectations of interest rate hikes once again exposed the vulnerability of the cryptocurrency market.

Bitcoin Falls Below $81,000: What Shook the Cryptocurrency Market?
0 minute

In recent days, the cryptocurrency market has faced a wave of economic and political pressures that pushed Bitcoin below $81,000 on October 8, 2026, bringing the digital asset to its lowest level in nearly three weeks. The decline showed that even an asset with an established position in the cryptocurrency market is not immune to developments in the global economy or shifts in investor behavior.

Higher Oil Prices, Greater Risk for Digital Assets

One of the key factors weighing on the market was growing concern over an escalation of military tensions between Iran and the US and possible disruptions to energy supply routes. As geopolitical risks increased, oil prices also climbed, with US crude reaching around $93 a barrel and Brent crude rising above $105. Higher energy prices can drive up production and transportation costs, reinforcing the likelihood that inflation will persist.

Such conditions typically complicate central banks’ policy decisions and prompt investors to reassess their asset allocations. When uncertainty rises, some market participants move away from volatile assets, a shift that can also reduce demand for Bitcoin. However, the entire price decline cannot be attributed solely to rising oil prices; it resulted from several influential factors converging at the same time.

Treasury Bonds: A Serious Competitor to Cryptocurrencies

Developments in the US debt market also weighed on trading sentiment. The yield on the country’s 30-year Treasury bonds reached around 5.73% during trading, a level not seen in approximately 24 years, according to a published report. Rising yields on government bonds can make lower-risk assets relatively more attractive while increasing the opportunity cost of holding assets such as Bitcoin.

This shift becomes more significant when investors are simultaneously concerned about inflation and the possibility of interest rate hikes. In such an environment, the cryptocurrency market needs stronger demand to sustain prices, and that demand may weaken if investors become less willing to take risks.

What Message Did the Federal Reserve Send to the Market?

Remarks by Christopher Waller, a member of the US Federal Reserve Board of Governors, were another factor shaping traders’ expectations. He said that if economic data develop in line with forecasts, further interest rate increases may be necessary to bring inflation down to the Fed’s 2% target, although this would not necessarily require rate hikes at consecutive meetings.

At the same time, market estimates put the probability of a 0.25-percentage-point rate hike at the December meeting above 70%, while the prevailing expectation for the October meeting was that rates would remain in the 3.75% to 4% range. Thus, even without an immediate rate increase, the possibility of tighter monetary policy could prevent confidence in riskier assets from recovering quickly.

Transfers of Government-Linked Bitcoin Raise Traders’ Concerns

The transfer of more than 12,000 Bitcoin from a wallet associated with assets seized by the US government added to market concerns. The transfer was valued at more than $1 billion and took place a few hours after another asset transfer worth around $770 million to the Coinbase Prime platform.

Despite the significance of the event, transferring cryptocurrency does not, by itself, mean that it will be sold. The identity of the owner of the destination address and the ultimate fate of the assets remained unclear. Without further evidence, the transfer therefore cannot be treated as definitive proof that a large volume of Bitcoin is about to enter the market for sale. Nevertheless, in a market sensitive to potential supply, such news can influence short-term expectations.

$82,000 Range: A Test of Market Confidence

Technical analysis had identified the $82,500 level as an important benchmark for assessing Bitcoin’s short-term trajectory. A move below this level heightened concerns that market weakness could persist, but no single price level can determine the direction of future movements on its own.

Buyer behavior, trading volume, capital flows into exchange-traded funds and broader macroeconomic developments also play a role in shaping the next trend.

Bitcoin’s return above $82,500 in trading on October 10 indicated a partial price recovery. However, such a limited rebound alone does not establish that selling pressure has ended or that a sustained uptrend has begun.

Overall, Bitcoin’s recent decline should be viewed as the result of converging geopolitical concerns, rising energy prices, higher US Treasury yields, interest rate expectations and traders’ sensitivity to potential supply developments. The cryptocurrency’s future trajectory will depend on how these factors evolve and whether demand recovers or weakens. As a result, making decisions based on a single price decline or a specific support level, without accounting for volatility risk, can be misleading.
