The Iranian president made the remarks on Tuesday during a meeting with the new Indian Ambassador to Tehran, Vishwesh Negi, who presented his credentials.

Pezeshkian said Iran and India enjoy deep-rooted and friendly relations, stressing the need to follow up on agreements and understandings reached during his trip to India last month, where he attended the BRICS summit.

He said “extensive and constructive” talks were held between Iran and India during his visit, leading to good understandings. “I have emphasized that these understandings should swiftly enter the implementation process,” he said.

Pezeshkian added that good understandings were also reached within BRICS, with a focus on economic cooperation and strengthening multilateralism.

He also referred to the Indian prime minister’s emphasis on holding a meeting of the Iran–India Joint Economic Commission as soon as possible, saying the meeting should be convened promptly to explore ways of expanding trade, economic and financial cooperation between the two countries.

Within the framework of the Joint Economic Commission, Iran and India can draw up a roadmap for long-term and strategic cooperation and establish mechanisms to tap the potential of their bilateral ties, Pezeshkian said.

He also stressed the importance of expanding Iran–India relations at both bilateral and regional levels, saying stronger ties and cooperation between the two countries would not only serve their interests but also contribute to regional peace and security.

Pezeshkian underlined the important role of the Iranian and Indian diplomatic missions in strengthening bilateral relations, saying the two countries’ ambassadors can facilitate interactions, follow up on agreements, and activate new areas of cooperation.

For his part, Negi said a new chapter would be opened in Tehran–New Delhi relations during his tenure, expressing confidence that his mission would help boost trade ties between the two countries.

He expressed hope that he and his colleagues would contribute to increasing bilateral trade and further activating the existing potential in economic and commercial relations between Iran and India.
