NOURNEWS - The Zionist newspaper Ma'ariu reported today Sunday that the Likud party was witnessing a state of tension and internal strikes, and that there were signs of an intra-party uprising against its leader Benjamin Netanyahu, who failed to form a right-wing government in four rounds of elections.
The newspaper quoted informed sources within the party as saying; in the recent days, we have seen an increase in tensions and turmoil within the party and members' desire for Netanyahu to resign from the party leadership because Netanyahu was silent on some issues during his tenure as prime minister, but has since issued norm-breaking slogans.
According to this report; in the recent days, tensions, turmoil and clashes within the Likud party have risen after party members became convinced that Netanyahu, as the leader of the opposition, has no intention of stepping down.
Ma'ariu emphasized that some party activists have expressed interest in Netanyahu's entourage, including his advisers and aides, to lead the Likud, and this interest can be seen in various studies passed on to Shay Galilei, the party's coordinating director.
Also, a senior Likud official also said: "Fear and silence among members have been broken after Netanyahu was removed from power. They were quiet about his inefficiencies during Netanyahu's time as prime minister, but are currently interacting with the new administration.
On the other hand, the party's internal tension has affected many Likud members' representatives in the Knesset, with some planning to hold internal party meetings in the coming months, and some are unlikely to demand internal elections to elect a new party leader as well as elections at party branches in Israel.
According to Ma'ariu newspaper, a new process is underway to nominate new Likud members from all regions of Israel, and members are looking for someone to consolidate power. Former Finance Minister Israel Katz currently has the option of a proposal that holds the position of general secretary.
In the recent days, Katz has stepped up his party activities and, through numerous political and economic interviews, is pushing for a reform of the Likud leadership law. He said in a statement that he would limit Likud's presidency to eight years and would not allow anyone who supported other parties or left the party for two terms to enter Likud.
Netanyahu, who is currently facing numerous financial and moral charges in court, faced round-the-clock protests by citizens in the Occupied Territories in the final months of his presidency due to economic inefficiency, escalating racial discrimination, and inability to manage the covid19 pandemic.
