NOURNEWS - Special representative of the Iranian Foreign Ministry for Afghanistan Affairs Mohammad Ebrahim Taherian and his Uzbek counterpart Ismatulla Irgashev in a meeting underlined the need for stopping violence and establish truce as an important step in reducing the sufferings of the Afghan people.
During the meeting in Tehran on Monday, Taherian and Irgashev exchanged views on the latest developments in Afghanistan and the intra-Afghan talks.
Iranian and Uzbek special envoys for Afghanistan Affairs emphasized the need for reducing violence and establishing ceasefire as an important step towards alleviation of problems facing Afghan people.
They pointed out that ‘negotiation’ and reaching an understanding’ are the only reassuring way to create lasting stability and peace in Afghanistan.
In a relevant development on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry's Director General for West Asia Seyed Rasoul Mousavi called on the United Nations to act in line with its obligations and play an active role in coordinating the intra-Afghan talks aimed at achieving a sustainable peace in that country.
"Today I had a good discussion on Afghanistan with UN Special Representative for Afghanistan Deborah Lyons," Mousavi tweeted.
"My main message to her in a short phrase: If international community is eager to restore peace in Afghanistan the best way is that the UN play as the main coordinator for peace process," he added.
In a relevant meeting on Sunday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi conferred with Lyons on the latest developments in Afghanistan.
Araqchi and Lyons shared views on Afghanistan’s political and security situation and intra-Afghan talks underway in Doha.
The Iranian diplomat reaffirmed Tehran’s support for Afghan peace process involving all Afghan political parties, underlining the need for protecting the achievements of the Afghan people over the past two decades, especially the Constitution and its democratic structures, and the rights of ethnic and religious minorities.
He said that Iran is ready to cooperate with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) in this regard.
Lyons, for her part, lauded Iran's positive role in supporting Afghanistan and expressed the UN readiness to help establish peace in Afghanistan.
As the UNAMA chief, she underlined the importance of implementing economic plans for the development of Afghanistan's infrastructure and helping improve the living conditions of the people.
