In response to Iran's launch of the Noor satellite, Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the Russian parliament's foreign relations committee, said the launch did not violate a UN Security Council resolution, Interfax reported.
Kusachov said the satellite's military presence did not mean it was carrying a weapon.
He also said that after the ratification of the international treaties that prohibited the use of weapons of mass destruction in orbit around the earth, the target of military satellites was transport, communications and exploration.
The UN Security Council Resolution 2231 calls on Iran not to develop ballistic missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads, but has not made this necessary, the Russian official said.
Kosachev also said Russia was unaware that Iran was testing a missile to carry nuclear weapons.
According to the report, the Russian official's remarks follow that Noor satellite, as the first military satellite of the Islamic Republic of Iran, was successfully launched yesterday morning (Wednesday, May 23) from the satellite for a two-stage messenger from Iran's central desert by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. It was launched and orbited 425 kilometers from Earth.
