Speaking in parliament on Sunday ahead of the anniversary of the start of Iraq’s war of aggression against Iran on September 22, 1980, Ghalibaf said the eight-year war transformed popular resistance into a driving force for self-reliance and independence.
He said that while the battlefield was once confined to geographical borders, defense has become more fluid and deeper today.
Ghalibaf described September 22 as the beginning of an “unfair aggression” against Iran, which had recently freed itself from the Pahlavi regime, saying the war failed to bring the country to its knees.
According to the Parliament speaker, the resistance and steadfastness of the Iranian people during the eight-year Sacred Defense period fueled the country’s self-reliance and fundamental independence over the past four decades and brought it closer to the goals of the Islamic Revolution.
“We are repeating that historical experience today, with the difference that the resistance of the Iranian people is not only a guarantor of Iran’s security, but also, by shaping a new order in the region and the world, will bring about openings in economic and strategic fields,” he said.
Ghalibaf added that the people’s historic resistance would take Iran to a new level of power and prosperity.
Backed by the United States and European powers, former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein waged a war of aggression against the Islamic Republic on September 22, 1980, less than two years after the Islamic Revolution in Iran.
