Iran’s population surpasses 87 million as urban growth continues

Iran’s population has surpassed 87 million people, according to estimates by the Statistical Center of Iran, with the country’s population reaching 87,006,037 people.

The figure comes as the Statistical Center had previously estimated Iran’s population at around 86.56 million and projected it would reach 87.13 million by the end of the Iranian calendar year 1405 (March 2027).

Under the projection, more than 67 million people will live in urban areas, while the rural population will stand at around 20 million.

Demographic data also show that the average household size in Iran has declined to 3.19 members, marking the lowest level recorded since the 1330s (1950s).

According to official statistics, Iran registered 892,227 births in the last year (March 21, 2025–March 20, 2026), while the number of registered deaths stood at approximately 459,984 during the same period.

The highest number of births was recorded in the summer of last year, while the largest number of deaths occurred in spring.
