Quiet Treasure That Conquered the World

NOURNEWS – Iran has secured fourth place worldwide with 27 inscriptions on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, underscoring the country's rich civilizational legacy and enduring cultural traditions.

Iran has once again reinforced its distinguished standing in global culture. According to the latest UNESCO figures, the country ranks fourth in the world with 27 elements inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The ranking places Iran behind China, Türkiye, and France, reflecting the depth of its historical, cultural, and civilizational heritage.

According to the data, China leads the list with 45 inscriptions, followed by Türkiye with 32 and France with 30. Iran ranks fourth with 27 inscriptions. It is followed by Spain with 26, Azerbaijan with 24, Croatia, Japan, and South Korea with 23 each, and Belgium, Italy, and the United Arab Emirates with 21 each.

Intangible cultural heritage encompasses rituals, traditions, performing arts, craftsmanship, indigenous knowledge, music, festivals, and ways of life passed down through generations, preserving the cultural identity of nations. Unlike monuments or archaeological sites, these traditions remain alive through continued practice and transmission within communities.

Among Iran’s UNESCO-inscribed elements are a remarkable collection of ancient rituals, arts, and traditions that embody the country's cultural identity. Notable examples include:

  • Ta'zieh, the ritual dramatic art commemorating the events of Ashura through a fusion of music, theater, and religious performance.
  • Yalda/Chella, the ancient celebration of the year's longest night, symbolizing solidarity, hope, and the triumph of light.
  • Turkmen needlework, one of Iran's most authentic traditional handicrafts, renowned for its distinctive motifs and vibrant colors.
  • The art of illumination (Tazhib), the refined decoration of manuscripts, Qur'ans, and artworks with intricate arabesque designs and gold ornamentation.
  • The art of miniature painting, celebrated for its delicate technique, vivid colors, and depictions of historical and literary themes.
  • The Pilgrimage to the Monastery of Saint Thaddeus, an annual religious pilgrimage symbolizing Iran's longstanding tradition of cultural and religious coexistence.
  • Chogan (polo), the ancient Iranian equestrian sport accompanied by storytelling, music, and associated cultural traditions.
  • The Mashhad-e Ardehal Carpet-Washing Rituals, an annual religious and traditional ceremony held near Kashan.
  • Naqqali, the ancient art of dramatic storytelling centered on epic, historical, and religious narratives.
  • The traditional skills of building and sailing Iranian Lenj boats in the Persian Gulf, preserving centuries-old maritime craftsmanship and navigation techniques.
  • Pahlevani and Zoorkhaneh rituals, a unique combination of traditional athletics, ethics, music, and Iranian culture.
  • The Radif of Iranian music, the foundational repertoire of Persian classical music, consisting of melodic modes and canonical compositions passed from master to student.

Iran's fourth-place global ranking represents more than a statistical achievement. It reflects the country's vast cultural diversity, ethnic richness, and the continuity of traditions preserved over centuries. Many of these living heritage elements remain an integral part of daily life, religious observances, national celebrations, traditional arts, and the customs of Iran's diverse communities.

International inscription not only helps safeguard Iran's cultural identity but also promotes the country's civilization globally, supports cultural tourism, strengthens traditional artists and practitioners, and ensures the transmission of indigenous knowledge to future generations.

Cultural heritage experts believe Iran's rich diversity of local traditions offers considerable potential for additional UNESCO inscriptions, further enhancing the country's international cultural standing in the years ahead.
