What Lies Behind Türkiye’s Diplomatic Surge and Iran’s Rise?

NOURNEWS – The latest global diplomatic network rankings show that China leads the world with 274 overseas missions, while Iran, with 149 diplomatic missions, ranks ahead of Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.

A recent review of the number of embassies, consulates, and overseas diplomatic missions maintained by countries worldwide shows that the breadth of a diplomatic network remains one of the most important indicators of soft power in the international system. According to the data, China ranks first with 274 diplomatic missions worldwide, followed closely by the US with 271. The narrow gap highlights the growing importance of diplomacy alongside economic and military power.

Türkiye ranks third with 252 missions, followed by Japan with 251. The rapid expansion of Türkiye’s diplomatic network in recent years reflects Ankara’s strategy to increase its regional and international influence. Japan, backed by its strong economy and extensive trade ties, remains one of the leading players in global diplomacy.

Russia ranks fifth with 230 missions. The United Kingdom and Germany follow with 225 and 217 missions, respectively, demonstrating that European countries continue to maintain extensive political and consular networks to preserve their global influence.

India, with 201 missions, and Spain, with 195, rank eighth and ninth. India’s presence among the top ten reflects its efforts to play a broader role in international affairs and expand its political and economic engagement worldwide.

Iran ranks tenth with 149 active embassies, consulates, and diplomatic missions abroad. The figures indicate that Iran’s diplomatic network is broader than that of several countries commonly regarded as major economic or political actors. Iran’s 149 missions place it ahead of Switzerland (141), Hungary (140), Poland (135), Saudi Arabia (133), and the United Arab Emirates (126).

Iran’s position underscores the importance it places on maintaining and expanding political, economic, and cultural relations with other countries. While the number of overseas missions alone does not determine a country’s influence, it remains one of the key indicators of soft power and international engagement capacity.

Notably, only three missions separate China and the US at the top of the rankings, highlighting the intensity of their competition not only in economics and technology but also in diplomacy. Meanwhile, Türkiye’s third-place position and its relatively small gap with the top two countries reflect its ambition to become a more influential player in global politics.

Another notable point is Iran’s lead over Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Iran maintains 16 more overseas missions than Saudi Arabia and 23 more than the UAE. It also exceeds Switzerland by eight missions and Hungary by nine.

Overall, the data show that in today’s world, diplomacy and the expansion of overseas diplomatic networks remain among the principal tools countries use to increase influence, deepen economic relations, support citizens abroad, and strengthen soft power, a field in which international competition continues to intensify year after year.
