Rahbari, now in his fifth season with the Mariinsky, will lead the Mariinsky Symphony Orchestra in a program featuring two landmark works by German composer Johannes Brahms: the ‘Violin Concerto in D Major and Symphony No. 1 in C Minor’. Acclaimed Russian violinist Anna Savkina will appear as the soloist.
The performance adds another chapter to Rahbari’s long-standing engagement with Brahms’ repertoire. Nearly four decades ago, he recorded the German composer’s complete orchestral works for the international label Naxos, a collection that drew attention from classical music audiences worldwide.
Rahbari opened the Persian New Year at the Mariinsky in March with a special Nowruz concert that featured his composition ‘My Mother Iran’ alongside works by Iranian composers Mahyar Tafreshi-Pour and Mehran Rouhani. The event played to a sold-out hall and was selected for television broadcast.
Invited to the Mariinsky during the 2021-2022 season by Artistic Director Valery Gergiev to conduct works by Dmitri Shostakovich and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, Rahbari was subsequently appointed permanent guest conductor. Since then, he has led dozens of major symphonic works while helping introduce Iranian performers and composers to one of the world’s foremost musical stages.
Born in Tehran in 1948, Rahbari has also held guest conducting positions with leading European orchestras, including the Belgian Radio and Television Philharmonic, the Czech Philharmonic and the Belgrade Philharmonic.
