Not long after the Zionist regime backed away from its threat of large-scale attacks against Beirut’s southern suburb (Dahiyeh), under the cover of Trump’s claimed mediation but in reality due to Hezbollah’s extensive preparedness and strong warnings from the Islamic Republic of Iran, the US State Department claimed early Thursday that the Zionist regime and Lebanon had agreed to a ceasefire under Washington’s supervision.
The statement said: “Israel and Lebanon have agreed to establish pilot zones in which the Lebanese Army will exercise exclusive control.” It further claimed: “Israel believes its security and territorial integrity can only be achieved through the disarmament of Hezbollah and the dismantling of its infrastructure.”
Within this framework, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated that the US is expected to determine the timeline and mechanism for implementing the ceasefire. This comes as the fourth round of negotiations between the Zionist regime and the Lebanese government, mediated by the US, is taking place under circumstances suggesting that the initiative is aimed not at securing Lebanon, but at rendering the country defenseless, steering it toward accommodation, and consolidating the Zionist regime’s occupation. Meanwhile, the Resistance and many Lebanese political currents, emphasizing the illegal and treasonous nature of such an agreement, insist on continuing the struggle against the aggressors until all occupied territories are liberated.
Ceasefire or Revival of Failed Zionist Projects?
Although the US claims to be seeking peace and an end to the war between Lebanon and the Zionist regime, developments throughout the decades-long existence of the illegitimate Zionist regime indicate that every agreement and ceasefire has merely served as a tool for buying time to consolidate previous occupations and expand its influence. A clear example can be seen in Gaza, where Zionist occupation has steadily expanded since the inception of the so-called peace process.
Today, despite claims such as establishing control over Lebanon’s historic fortress, the Zionist regime has failed to achieve its objectives in southern Lebanon or push Hezbollah north of the Litani River. It is therefore seeking to buy time and exert greater pressure in order to consolidate occupied positions, facilitate the return of settlers to the northern occupied territories, and disarm Hezbollah.
Statements by officials of the Zionist regime regarding the alleged ceasefire further confirm this reality. Israel Katz, the regime’s minister of war, stated that the agreement between Israel and the Lebanese government includes the continued presence of the regime’s army in Lebanon’s security zone up to the Yellow Line and the prevention of residents from returning to the area. He also stressed that the regime would continue targeting Hezbollah-related infrastructure in Lebanon.
Meanwhile, Eyal Zamir, Chief of Staff of the Zionist regime’s army, declared that no ceasefire exists in Lebanon and that military operations will continue. These positions clearly demonstrate that the concept of a ceasefire holds little meaning for the regime and that attacks against Lebanon will persist. As such, the primary outcome of these talks would be nothing more than the justification of killings and the creation of deterrence against any Lebanese response.
Mediation or the Engineering of a New Regional Sedition?
Although Trump claims to be seeking peace in Lebanon and across West Asia, his announcement several days ago that he personally prevented Netanyahu from attacking Dahiyeh through a phone call amounts to an explicit admission of the US’s direct role in the Zionist regime’s aggression and crimes throughout the region.
This political embarrassment comes as Trump has demonstrated that he is far from a neutral mediator and that his current actions stem not from humanitarian concerns but from a combination of domestic and international challenges. On one hand, crises resulting from US policies in West Asia, rising economic costs, and growing public dissatisfaction with Trump’s war-driven policies have generated significant opposition within American society. On the other hand, the US House of Representatives recently passed a measure to end Trump’s war against Iran by a vote of 215 to 208.
On the global stage, the US is increasingly viewed as one of the principal drivers of economic and security crises. This comes as Iran’s insistence that the Lebanon file be taken into account in any agreement with the US has become a significant challenge for Trump.
Under these circumstances, Trump appears to have concluded that he will achieve no meaningful gains on the Iran file. Consequently, by focusing on Lebanon and relying on the conciliatory approach of some Lebanese officials, he is attempting to project an image of peacemaking while managing financial markets, reducing domestic protests, addressing congressional pressure over his war powers, and securing a political achievement for himself.
At the same time, within the framework of a new sedition serving Zionist interests, Trump is promoting the notion of a trilateral ceasefire agreement in Lebanon in an effort to separate the Lebanon file from negotiations with Iran, thereby preventing the emergence of comprehensive regional security and reducing the bargaining power of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Europe: Supporting Actors in US–Zionist Scenario
Another important aspect is the role of European countries in this US–Zionist game. While Europeans have limited themselves to expressions of regret in response to the Zionist regime’s aggression, they are now speaking of a $116 million support package for the Lebanese Army without acknowledging the regime’s terrorist nature or taking any deterrent measures. The primary objective of this initiative is the disarmament of Hezbollah and, in practice, another service to the Zionist regime.
In this context, French President Emmanuel Macron, concerned about being sidelined in Lebanon’s political equations, has claimed support for the Lebanon-Israel ceasefire reached in Washington.
Europe’s supportive posture toward the Zionist regime becomes even more evident when German Chancellor Friedrich Merz calls for Hezbollah’s disarmament and the United Kingdom echoes the same demand without condemning the Zionist regime’s crimes.
Europeans have demonstrated in Lebanon that they are not saviors of peace but rather part of the crisis, actors who, despite paying substantial costs, continue to serve the objectives of the US and the Zionist regime.
Lebanese Resistance: A Strategy That Will Not Change
Although the US, under the guise of mediation, and Europe, under the banner of supporting peace, are attempting to help realize the Zionist regime’s occupationist objectives, this project faces serious obstacles in Lebanon.
On one hand, as Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri and many political factions have emphasized, the agreement was formulated without the approval of parliament and numerous Lebanese political currents and therefore lacks legal legitimacy.
On the other hand, a broad spectrum of Lebanese forces, from Hezbollah and the Amal Movement to the Free Patriotic Movement, as well as Walid Jumblatt and other political groups, alongside the Lebanese people, continue to stress the preservation of the Resistance as the only effective means of confronting the occupiers.
In this regard, Hezbollah Secretary-General Sheikh Naim Qassem described the ceasefire agreement as the Lebanese government’s “complete surrender and defeat” and labeled it “shameless.” Referring to the agreement’s place within the “Greater Israel” project, he reiterated Hezbollah’s core demands, stating that the movement would accept only a complete ceasefire and the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon.
The prevailing positions among Lebanese political currents in support of the Resistance’s weapons alongside the army and the people, as part of Lebanon’s defense strategy, indicate the early failure of the US project to force Lebanon into submission under the cover of a ceasefire, a project that may itself generate new challenges for Trump on both the domestic and international fronts.
