In a significant development in the election of non-permanent members of the UN Security Council, Germany, for the first time, fell behind its competitors, Portugal and Austria, in the first round of voting in the UN General Assembly and lost one of the two seats allocated to the Western European and Others Group (WEOG) for the 2027–2028 term. Germany secured only 104 votes, well short of the required threshold of 127, while Portugal led with 134 votes and Austria followed with 131.
This heavy defeat has carried considerable domestic and international consequences for the German government. Many observers attribute the failure to the gap between Berlin’s human rights claims and its actual conduct. On the one hand, Germany has supported the Zionist regime and the US in actions widely criticized by the international community; on the other, it has become one of the centers of war-mongering in the Ukraine crisis. From this perspective, the result can be seen as a sign of profound changes in the international arena, a growing inclination toward a new world order, and the weakening of the unipolar dominance of the hegemonic system.
Global Reflection of Resistance; Diplomatic Defeat for Israel’s Principal Supporter
Germany’s failure to obtain a non-permanent Security Council seat can be viewed as another achievement for the Resistance Front and a major setback for the Zionist regime, given that Germany has consistently been among the regime’s foremost political supporters and arms suppliers. Even on the eve of the Security Council vote, reports emerged regarding the transfer of weapons from US bases in Germany to the occupied territories.
German leaders have long operated under the assumption that by satisfying the Zionist lobby and aligning with the US, they could achieve their strategic objectives. Thus, Friedrich Merz, Germany’s chancellor, openly stated that Israel is doing the West’s “dirty work” in the Middle East, while Berlin has supported the Zionist regime’s military actions in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran.
Importantly, one of the Resistance Front’s most significant achievements since Operation Al-Aqsa Flood has been raising global public awareness of the true nature of the Zionist regime. This awareness has influenced not only voters in elections across various countries but also major governmental decisions in the international arena. In this context, Johann Wadephul, Germany’s foreign minister, described the result as a bitter defeat and acknowledged that Berlin’s unwavering support for Israel had cost Germany a portion of its crucial votes in the General Assembly.
From this perspective, the setback can be regarded as part of the Resistance Front’s strategic achievements at the international level, an achievement attained not through compromise but through resistance and global awareness-building, and one that constitutes a significant defeat for the Zionist regime. Such a defeat could further deepen the regime’s international isolation.
Heavy Cost of War-Mongering: From Ukraine to West Asia
Although German officials have sought to justify their defeat by accusing Russia of shaping the international narrative against them, the reality is that Germany, particularly under Chancellor Merz, has become part of the global war machine.
On the one hand, Germany has fueled the Ukraine war under the banner of confronting Russia and remains one of the principal obstacles to peace. On the other, alongside the US and the Zionist regime, it has supported tension-escalating and militaristic policies in West Asia. Germany has provided the Zionist regime with billions of dollars in military assistance and has made its bases available to the US.
Although Germany, like many allies of the US and the Zionist regime, announced that it would not directly participate in a war against Iran after witnessing Iran’s resilience and capabilities, including its prudent management of the Strait of Hormuz, in practice, its contradictory behavior indicates that no fundamental change has occurred in the nature of its policies.
Today, the international community no longer views Germany as a champion of peace but rather as a war-mongering actor that, under the pretext of European security, seeks to revive approaches reminiscent of its dark past and regarded as a threat to global security.
Decline of Western Unilateralism and Rise of a Multilateral Global Order
Although German leaders, including the chancellor, claimed that a Security Council seat would be used to support international law and strengthen the UN’s role in preserving global peace and stability, these claims have come under serious challenge. The challenge stems from structural changes in the international system and the world’s movement away from Western unilateralism toward a new multilateral order.
Human rights organizations have repeatedly warned about the troubling state of freedom of expression in Germany, particularly the targeted suppression of protesters opposing the crimes in Gaza. Moreover, while Berlin’s leaders shed tears for Ukrainians, they have either remained silent regarding humanitarian catastrophes and mass killings elsewhere or supported their perpetrators. Germany, for example, even refrained from condemning the martyrdom of 168 Minab schoolchildren in a US-Zionist crime.
Today, the global arena no longer provides space for the dominance and deception of the West’s unilateral order, an order whose legacy has been crisis, insecurity, crimes against humanity, double standards, sanctions, and threats against nations.
The vote against Germany can be seen as a clear indication of the emergence of a new approach in the international system, one that highlights the world’s accelerating shift toward multilateralism. One of the principal forces behind this transformation is the model known as the “Resistance Front,” a movement that has exposed the true face of the hegemonic system, Western unilateralism, and its illegitimate offspring, the Zionist regime, while guiding global public opinion toward greater awareness and awakening. This trajectory could ultimately contribute to the realization of a new multilateral world order.
Germany’s fate serves as a cautionary lesson for countries that remain under the illusion that greater benefits can be secured through submission to the US and compromise with the Zionist regime.
