Iran marks 37 years since passing of Imam Khomeini

A ceremony marking the 37th anniversary of the passing of Imam Khomeini, founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, began on Thursday at his mausoleum in southern Tehran, attended by senior officials and thousands of people from across the country.

Mourners started paying tribute to Imam Khomeini as well as the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, by reciting prayers and chanting slogans expressing loyalty to Iran’s current Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei.

The event was attended by Seyyed Hassan Khomeini, grandson of the late Imam, and Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei.

The ceremony will feature a speech by Imam Khomeini’s grandson, as well as the reading of a written message from the Leader of the Islamic Revolution.

Imam Khomeini led the 1979 Islamic Revolution and founded the Islamic Republic. He passed away on June 3, 1989.
