The first toll from ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz paid to Iran’s treasury

Abbas Papizadeh has announced that the first toll from ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz has been deposited into Iran's treasury, the amount of which is determined based on the type and volume of the cargo.

In an interview, Papizadeh said that the tolls from ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz were officially deposited into the central bank and transferred to the country’s treasury.

He explained that the amount of tolls received from ships varies depending on the type and volume of the cargo, and this is determined based on navigation conditions in waterways.

A member of the Economic Commission of Iran’s Parliament continued: “Part of the coastal area toward Oman is shallow and not navigable; as a result, two routes remain.”

One is a route between Iran and Oman which is currently very unsafe and not navigable due to security concerns. The second route enters Iran’s coastal waters and is safe. According to international law, a coastal country can collect tolls from ships entering its territorial waters.

On how the income will be spent, Papizadeh said that these sources are considered a source of income for the country and will be directly included in the public budget, and it will later be decided how they are used.
