Iran: Europe's 'international law' boast amounts to 'peak of hypocrisy'

The Foreign Ministry's spokesman denounces the European Union for preaching Iran about how it should treat enemy threats targeting the Strait of Hormuz, reminding how Brussels, itself, quietly green-lighted the adversaries' aggression targeting the Islamic Republic.

Esmail Baghaei made the remarks in a post on X on Saturday after the EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas claimed that Iran was violating the international law by applying restrictions on naval transit through the strategic waterway.

Iran shut down the strategic waterway to vessels belonging to adversaries and their allies following the launch of the United States' and the Israeli regime's latest bout of unprovoked aggression targeting the Islamic Republic on February 28.

On April 7, Donald Trump announced a two-week lull in attacks targeting Iran after the closure sent shockwaves throughout the global energy markets, with the US president experiencing momentous further drop in his popularity as a result of spiking gasoline prices.

He, however, authorized continuation of a naval blockade he had ordered against the Islamic Republic, prompting Tehran to close the chokehold in retaliation earlier on Saturday.

Baghaei noted that the EU was lecturing Iran concerning its behavior regarding the strait, while Brussels "quietly green-lighted" the American-Israeli aggression. The official was apparently referring to the bloc's refusing to meaningfully oppose the aggression and condoning many of its members' allowing their respective airspaces to be used to contribute to attacks targeting the Islamic Republic.

The spokesman also lambasted Brussels for "looking the other way on atrocities against Iranians."

"Spare the sermons; Europe’s chronic failure to practice what it preaches has turned its 'international law' talk into peak hypocrisy," he added.

"No rule of international law forbids Iran, the coastal State, from taking necessary measures to stop the Strait of Hormuz being used for waging military aggression against Iran," Baghaei asserted.

The notion of "unconditional transit passage" through the strait, he concluded, "sailed the moment US/Israeli aggression brought US military assets into the strait’s backyard."
