Nizar Amedi elected new president of Iraq

Nizar Amedi has been elected Iraq's new president through a parliamentary vote, ending a political deadlock over the top executive post following the November parliamentary elections.

The Iraqi Parliament announced on Saturday the election of Amedi, the candidate of the Kurdistan Regional Union Party, in the second round of voting, with 249 lawmakers participating in the process.

Amedi previously served as the Minister of Environment in the government of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani for two years but resigned from the post in 2024.

According to Iraq's political custom after 2003 CE, the presidency is allocated to Kurds, the prime ministry to Shiites, and the parliament presidency to Sunnis.

The election of the president in Iraq is considered a key stage in the country's political process and can influence the formation of the government and future political developments.

Constitutionally, the president must be elected by a two-third majority of lawmakers, with a quota equivalent to 220 votes out of a total of 329 seats, and achieving it requires broad consensus among political parties.

According to Iraq's political tradition since 2003, the presidency is allocated to Kurds, the premiership to Shias, and the speaker of the parliament to Sunnis.
