Why Washington’s narrative command over the situation in Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted

Why did Washington retreat from its initial claims about Strait of Hormuz?

NOURNEWS – Contradictions in the statements of US officials regarding the passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, along with repeated denials by the White House and Western media outlets, point to operational and psychological disarray in Washington when confronted with the geopolitical reality of the Persian Gulf and Iran’s absolute dominance over this waterway. While Iran emphasizes its strategic position in this vital passage, the United States’ media-driven narrative appears to be facing an unprecedented crisis of credibility.

In recent days, as oil and petroleum product prices have surged, a series of contradictory statements by US officials about the situation in the Strait of Hormuz has emerged. At first, Donald Trump claimed that the Strait of Hormuz was open and that traffic was continuing as usual. Subsequently, the US Secretary of Energy stated on social media that an oil tanker had passed through the Strait of Hormuz under escort from the US Navy, a claim that immediately prompted a reaction from Iranian officials. Shortly afterwards, the tweet was deleted, and a source at the White House stated that the information had been released “prematurely”.

At the same time, media outlets such as Reuters and Al Jazeera reported that the White House did not in fact confirm the escorting of oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. This series of denials and revisions to the narrative suggests that the US political and media apparatus is experiencing a form of disarray in managing the crisis narrative. In such circumstances, the circulation of inconsistent reports is a sign of confusion and the presence of gaps in both decision-making and information management.

Psychological manipulation of global markets

Statements by Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, regarding the “dissemination of fake news to manipulate markets” can also be assessed within this framework. He emphasized that such actions would not save the United States from the economic consequences of its policies, particularly the wave of domestic inflation.

The global energy market is highly sensitive to developments in the Strait of Hormuz. According to some estimates, if a major disruption were to occur along this route, a substantial portion of global oil supply would be affected. In this context, some analyses have spoken of the possibility of a daily shortfall of around 20mn barrels of oil—an amount that, if realized, would surpass even the largest historical crises in the energy market.

Comparisons with events such as the Arab oil embargo of 1973, the Iranian Islamic Revolution of 1979, and the Iraq–Kuwait war in 1990 demonstrate just how vulnerable the global energy market is to developments in the Persian Gulf. As a result, hasty narrative-building may be interpreted as a sign of passivity in the face of Iran’s absolute power in managing traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

Strait of Hormuz and the geopolitical reality of the region

The Strait of Hormuz is considered one of the most important energy corridors in the world, with a significant portion of Middle Eastern oil exports passing through it. For this reason, any tension or restriction in this region immediately has global repercussions.

Under such circumstances, Iran’s role as a state located adjacent to the strait becomes particularly significant. Tehran has consistently stressed that the security of this passage should be ensured within the framework of regional security and through the participation of the Persian Gulf’s littoral states, rather than through the military presence of extra-regional powers.

When even some Western sources report that shipping companies have become hesitant about transiting this route—and that despite Trump’s insistence, no vessel is willing to pass through the strait—this suggests that the geopolitical realities of the region extend far beyond short-term political narratives.

Operational disarray after the escalation

The collection of contradictory messages from the US government and certain Western media outlets has reinforced the perception that, following the escalation of tensions, operational and psychological focus in Washington has been disrupted. Under such circumstances, the publication of uncoordinated reports or their rapid deletion from social media may indicate a lack of coordination at the decision-making level.

At the same time, this situation demonstrates that the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most influential nodes in regional and global power equations. Any movement within this corridor affects not only the security dynamics of the Persian Gulf but also global energy markets and the world economy.

The narrative crisis in Washington should therefore be understood as the result of Iran’s military dominance and the effectiveness of its cognitive warfare around one of the world’s most sensitive geopolitical chokepoints—a passage whose on-the-ground realities rapidly challenge many political narratives and military and security calculations.
