Iran’s foreign minister, IAEA chief discuss framework for potential Iran-US deal

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi held a high-level discussion on Wednesday to review the outcomes of the latest round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States.

During a telephone call, the two officials discussed the mechanisms and requirements for drafting a coherent and structured framework to guide future diplomatic efforts, according to an Iranian statement.

Araghchi expressed appreciation for Grossi's presence and role during the talks in Geneva, Switzerland.

Iran is currently concentrated on formulating an "initial and integrated framework" to ensure progress in the upcoming rounds of dialogue, Araghchi said.

For his part, the director general provided a positive assessment of the results from the February 17 meetings in Geneva.

Grossi reaffirmed the ’s readiness to cooperate and provide technical support as the parties work toward formalizing a draft for the negotiation process.

The Wednesday phone call follows a three-hour indirect meeting between Araghchi and American negotiators in Geneva, after which Araghchi said the two sides agreed on a set of guiding principles to clear the path for future talks.

The Geneva talks are the latest step in indirect nuclear negotiations that began in the Omani capital, Muscat, on February 6. Araghchi and US envoy Steve Witkoff lead the negotiating teams.

The Geneva negotiations took place amid heightened regional tensions.

Donald Trump, the president of the United States, has ordered additional military deployments to the region, including an extra aircraft carrier, thousands of troops, warplanes, and guided-missile destroyers, according to US officials.

In late January, Trump spoke of “another beautiful armada” of warships heading towards Iran and said failure to reach a deal would bring consequences “far worse” than the illegal strikes of June 2025 on Iranian nuclear facilities.

Tehran has declared that it would respond decisively to any military adventurism, as in the case of the June US attacks, which prompted a ballistic missile barrage against Al Udeid, Washington’s most important regional airbase located in Qatar.
