Foreign interference altered nature of protests in Iran: Ambassador

Iran’s ambassador to France, Mohammad Amin-Nejad, says peaceful protests are a natural phenomenon, but foreign interference led to a change in the nature of the recent protests in Iran.

Speaking in an interview with France Inter radio, Amin-Nejad outlined Iran’s official position on the latest developments, the domestic security situation, and the role of external factors.

“Peaceful protests and the expression of economic and social demands are natural,” the ambassador said, adding that the country’s internal situation is currently under the control of the relevant authorities.

He noted that those who carried out violent and terrorist acts have been identified and “will be dealt with in accordance with the law.”

Responding to a question about the continuation of protests, Amin-Nejad said peaceful protest, especially amid economic crises, is an expected phenomenon and is not limited to Iran.

He added that after neutralizing agitators and individuals involved in terrorist acts, gatherings within the framework of legitimate and legal demands would be possible

The ambassador said the nature of some protests changed after several days.

“In the early days, the protests were largely peaceful, but later — especially from January 8 — provocations and interference from outside the country took place,” he said, citing violence, destruction of public property, attacks on medical centers and religious sites.

Amin-Nejad went on to say that when officials of certain countries openly support protesters, or foreign media and political figures speak of the presence of foreign elements and even enemy intelligence agents among demonstrators, “these developments cannot be considered purely internal.”
