Official: Sanctioning medicine for patients with special needs constitutes a crime against humanity

Secretary-General of the Human Rights Headquarters Nasser Seraj says that unjust and inhumane sanctions which have been imposed against Iran under political pretexts and cause serious harm to ordinary people and patients constitute a violation of fundamental human rights and a crime against humanity.

The unilateral US sanctions against the Iranian people are a clear example of human rights violations, Seraj said on Monday.

One of the most quintessential examples of human rights violations due to the imposition of sanctions is their direct and indirect negative and destructive impact on the healthcare system for patients, especially those with special and rare conditions, he added.

Seraj highlighted the report by the Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights, which addresses the devastating consequences of sanctions on the right to health and the challenges and difficulties faced by the Iranian people in accessing medicine and medical equipment.

Unilateral sanctions not only violate the right to health as stipulated in the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights but also threaten the lives of thousands of people, he stated.

Thousands of Iranian patients are facing death due to unilateral US sanctions against Iran, which hinder or delay access to medicine and medical equipment, Seraj said.

Although sanctions should not target medicines and medical supplies, their delivery to Iran has been severely reduced because the sanctions impact financial institutions, commercial and shipping companies, insurance providers, and create road-blocks to international payments.
