Iran Parliament speaker says legitimate protests must be addressed through dialogue

Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said protesters’ demands are valid and should be addressed through dialogue, stressing that restoring economic stability and responding to public demands must form the basis of reforms in favor of the people.

Speaking at parliament on Monday, Ghalibaf emphasized Leader of Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei’s guidance on distinguishing legitimate protesters from rioters.

The speaker said that all efforts should focus on restoring economic stability. He noted that the era of billions of dollars in exclusive rent-seeking has come to an end, stressing that the preferential exchange rate will not be removed but that its benefits will be delivered directly to the public.

He added that the government is determined to respond to rightful public demands through planned measures, and public protest should serve as a basis for reforms in favor of the people.

He warned, however, that individuals linked directly or indirectly to foreign intelligence services who seek to hijack protests and turn them into unrest must be dealt with firmly and intelligently to protect public security.

Ghalibaf said Iran has repeatedly defeated such threats and will do so again despite enemies deploying extensive intelligence, security, and media capabilities.

Ghalibaf outlined the pillars of national strength, including economic growth, preserving purchasing power, market stability, management reform, strategic partnerships, and strong defense capabilities.

He also thanked the government for implementing the electronic ration card program, saying it would help protect livelihoods. He noted that while execution flaws may exist, the government has committed to adjusting benefits in line with inflation.

Addressing global issues, he criticized double standards in the international system, pointing to the Israeli regime’s actions in Gaza and the United States’ actions in Venezuela. He said the world has entered an era where international law is giving way to the law of the jungle.
