Head of the Technology Exchange Office of the Organization for the Development of International Scientific and Technological Cooperation (ODISTC), Zahra Sahaei says Iran, with outstanding infrastructures in basic sciences, is trying to expand its cooperation with fellow BRICS members in the field of scientific research.

Sahaei made the remarks on the sidelines of the 7th Meeting of the BRICS Working Group on Research Infrastructures and Mega-Science Projects that kicked off in Tehran’s Azadi Hotel on Monday.

She said that the meeting is in line with Iran-BRICS cooperation and is being held in collaboration with the Organization for the Development of International Scientific and Technological Cooperation of the Vice Presidency for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-Based Economy.

“This meeting is a national event and we tried to have all the custodians and activists of the country's research infrastructures,” he said in reference to the participation of ministries and related agencies.

According to her, one of our main agenda of hosting this meeting was laying the groundwork for joint scientific projects among member countries, and that the model of Iran's laboratory network could be the basis for new cooperation in BRICS.

Dignitaries and high-ranking officials from countries including Iran, Russia, South Africa and Brazil attended the three-day Tehran meeting that focused on a wide range of topics, including developing joint research cooperation, helping to advance mechanisms for defining and financing large scientific projects, promoting the role of research infrastructure as a driving engine of innovation, sustainable development, and scientific diplomacy.

The BRICS Working Group was established in 2015 during the 3rd Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Science, Technology, and Innovation. It provides opportunities for fundamental and applied research that can lead to solutions for shared challenges faced by BRICS and the global community.
