Persian Gulf: A Miscalculation or an Opportunity for Cooperation?

The recent statement by the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) regarding Iran’s three islands and the claim of ownership over the Arash gas field comes at a time when West Asia is under the pressure of security crises caused by the destructive behavior of the United States and the Zionist regime. Such positions not only fail to contribute to regional stability but will also increase distrust and insecurity.

Nournews: At a time when West Asia, and especially the Persian Gulf region, is facing growing instability and insecurity due to the hostile actions of the Zionist regime and the destructive policies of the United States, the repetition of the PGCC’s claims over the three Iranian islands—Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa—as well as Saudi Arabia and Kuwait’s assertion of ownership over the Arash gas field, is a completely counterproductive move and contrary to the security interests of the region. Issuing such a statement amid ongoing tensions can only reinforce misinterpretations and suspicions that some countries may be seeking to exploit the circumstances to intensify regional crises.

During the recent 12-day conflict, despite the open and covert support of some regional actors for the aggressive policies and actions of Israel and the United States, Iran adopted an approach based on conflict management and restraint. This strategic conduct reflects Tehran’s deep understanding of the geopolitical sensitivity of the Persian Gulf and the necessity of maintaining regional stability and security. It is entirely clear that Iran’s restraint does not signify weakness; rather, it represents a realistic reassessment of strategic red lines and a precise calculation of interests and risks.

Although the PGCC’s repeated claims have been framed as rooted in international law, they in practice carry an opportunistic political and strategic message. Iran’s proud history demonstrates that its people, through steadfastness and constant sacrifice, have offered hundreds of thousands of martyrs in defense of their homeland. In light of this honorable legacy and the strategic significance of the islands and energy fields, Iran will in no way allow provocative actions to heighten tensions or cause dangerous miscalculations in the region.

Understanding this reality is the basis of any responsible, collective-security-oriented behavior by regional actors.

The real role of the Persian Gulf countries under current conditions is not advancing unrealistic and tension-inducing claims, but ensuring collective stability and security in the region. Only through respecting recognized borders, avoiding provocative actions, and engaging in constructive interaction can strategic cooperation opportunities and effective crisis management be achieved. Any behavior that fuels regional rivalries under the pretext of baseless claims will run counter to the long-term security interests of these countries.

From a strategic perspective, the PGCC’s recent statement not only fails to help resolve crises, but also reflects the insufficient understanding of some actors regarding the sensitivity of Iran’s national and regional security. Iran, relying on past experiences and its approach to managing tensions, is ready for logical engagement with its neighbors; however, it will respond with a calculated and strategic reaction to any attempt to impose unfounded claims. Iran’s restraint and prudent management—as noted by some Arab officials in the recent Manama summit—should serve as a clear model for regional stability. Repeating baseless claims will only intensify tensions and increase distrust, bringing no security benefit to the region.
