Sahand 2025 Joint Drills: Iran, Belarus, Uzbekistan kick off tactical counterterrorism operations

Iran, Belarus, and Uzbekistan have begun coordinated tactical counterterrorism operations as part of the Sahand 2025 joint drills taking place in northwestern Iran, the commander of the operations has said.

Brigadier General Nushad Abdari told IRNA on Wednesday that today’s tactical operations are being conducted silently, while the main exercise will take place tomorrow in a live scenario using actual ammunition.

He explained that in the first phase of the exercise, participating teams from the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) will monitor, identify, and track the enemy, as well as carry out drone operations.

Next, the IRGC’s reserve team will pursue the enemy, secure border areas, and conduct aerial reconnaissance via helicopter teams to neutralize threats, the military official said.

In the second phase, Abdari noted, the Iranian team will work jointly with the Belarusian team to carry out a mission to free hostages from the enemy, either capturing or eliminating them.

The third phase will see IRGC teams cooperating with an Uzbek team to clear the area and establish lasting security, according to Abdari.

He also said the Sahand 2025 joint anti-terror drills provide the participating countries with the opportunity to exchange operational experience and enhance coordination among units.

Abdari added that the goal of the exercise is to establish deterrence and lasting security in the region.

The participating countries include Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, and Iran, while neighboring countries such as Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Oman, and Iraq are attending as guests. A total of 18 high-ranking delegations, including 20 senior military chiefs and dozens of staff officers, are participating in the five-day drills, which will conclude on December 4.
