Germany’s Lufthansa to restore flights to Iran

Germany’s flag carrier Lufthansa is to restore its flights to Iran nearly five months after it suspended operations in the country because of Israel’s aggression.

The Fars news agency said in a Monday report that senior representatives of Lufthansa and its low-cost subsidiary Austrian Airlines had held a meeting with officials in Tehran’s Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA) earlier in the day to discuss plans for the resumption of flights.

The report said Lufthansa representatives also conducted an on-site assessment of safety conditions, air traffic management, and airport operations at IKA and were satisfied with the level of safety and operational standards in the airport.

It said the German airline plans to resume a schedule of six flights per week between tFrankfurt and Tehran starting in early 2026.

The report said that Lufthansa and Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization are also finalizing a memorandum of understanding covering technical cooperation, crisis management, and the exchange of training experiences, adding that the agreement is expected to lead to increased collaboration between Iran and European Union aviation bodies.

Aviation experts say Lufthansa’s return marks a renewed confidence in Iran’s airspace and could pave the way for other major international airlines to resume operations in the country.

Airlines began avoiding Iranian skies on June 13, when the Israeli regime launched an unprovoked aggression against the country.

Israeli aggression prompted a fierce response from the Iranian armed forces as they targeted various areas in the Israeli-occupied territories with missiles and drones, causing a major disruption to international aviation services in the entire West Asia region.

The war ended 12 days later after the Israeli regime declared a unilateral ceasefire in a deal brokered by Washington, which Iran also accepted.
