Pezeshkian urges faster implementation of gas flare collection projects as major contract signed

President Masoud Pezeshkian has emphasized his administration’s commitment to accelerating efforts to curb gas flaring, describing the initiative as both an economic and environmental milestone.

Speaking on Saturday at the signing ceremony of the country’s largest gas flaring collection project, Pezeshkian said the plan will sell flare gas from the National Iranian South Oil Company (NISOC) to private and knowledge-based enterprises.

He urged participating private companies to report any issues directly so that they can be resolved swiftly, without bureaucratic delays.

Pezeshkian called for shortening the 18-month timeline currently set for gas flaring projects, stressing that flare gas is a valuable national asset that must not be lost “even for a single day.”

The complete implementation of these projects will significantly improve environmental indicators and public health, he said.

“We must clear the way for investors. If problems arise, don’t wait for paperwork, call directly,” the president called on investors, saying that his administration is committed to solving challenges quickly and decisively.”

Under the Pezeshkian administration, 12 contracts for the collection and sale of flare gas will be implemented across Aghajari, Masjed Soleyman, and Ahvaz in Khuzestan Province, as well as Gachsaran in Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad province over an 18-month period.

The projects aim to extinguish 30 flares in 11 operational units, preventing the daily waste of more than 295 million cubic feet of gas. They are also expected to generate about $550 million in annual revenue, produce 800,000 tons of gas condensates each year, supply additional feedstock to petrochemical plants, inject 200 million cubic feet of gas into the national network, and reduce the country’s energy imbalance.

According to Oil Minister Mohsen Paknezhad, who also attended the Saturday ceremony, a total of seven gas flaring collection projects have become operational since the Pezeshkian administration took office in late July 2023.

Paknezhad said that plans are underway to increase the daily collection of flare gas to 20 million cubic meters by late March 2026, setting a new record for Iran’s oil and gas industry.
