Foreign Minister says Iran will not negotiate its sovereign rights

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi says Iran’s sovereign rights are neither negotiable nor subject to political pressure, emphasizing that the rule of law must prevail.

The Iranian foreign minister made the remark in a post on his X account, shared late on Friday, ahead of the expiration, on October 18, of the ten-year period established by UN Security Council Resolution 2231 that endorsed the 2015 Iran nuclear deal officially called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

He referred to this week’s ministerial meeting by the 125-member Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Kampala, Uganda, where they stressed in their final statement that all UN sanctions related to Iran’s nuclear program would officially expire when Resolution 2231 expires.

“At the recent NAM Ministerial Summit in Kampala, more than 120 nations joined Iran in recognizing reality: UN Security Council Resolution 2231 expires tomorrow 18 October, thereby terminating all past UNSC restrictions against Iran and removing Iran from the Security Council’s agenda,” Araghchi said in his Friday post.

He stressed that Iran remains a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and will uphold its commitments under the international accord, while continuing its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in accordance with a law passed by the Iranian Parliament in June this year, following US-Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear sites.

“As an NPT signatory, Iran will remain bound solely to its rights and obligations under the Treaty. This includes no limits whatsoever on the scale of its nuclear program, and cooperation with the IAEA only within the framework of the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and in line with the recent legislation adopted by the Iranian Parliament.”

Concluding his post, the top diplomat rejected “coercion” in the international arena, and stressed that Iran will not negotiate its sovereign rights.

“The unlawful measures pursued by a handful of isolated governments have been rejected by a vast majority of nations. Those who insist on distorting reality will only further isolate themselves with their current path. Iran’s sovereign rights are neither negotiable nor subject to political pressure. The rule of law — not coercion — must prevail.”
