Claims by the United States and three European countries – United Kingdom, France and Germany - regarding the reinstatement of UN Security Council resolutions, which were lifted in 2015 under the JCPOA, are invalid and should not be recognized as having any legal effect by other countries.
Speaking on Wednesday during the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Uganda, the top diplomat outlined Iran’s positions in a formal address to the assembly.
He stressed the importance of upholding the foundational principles of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), particularly the right of nations to self-determination, respect for the United Nations Charter, the prohibition of the use of force, and condemnation of unilateral coercive actions.
He called for strengthened solidarity and unity among developing countries to confront growing challenges and threats posed by unilateralism and hegemonic ambitions of certain powers.
Referring to the recent aggressive acts by the Israeli regime and the United States against Iran in June, Araghchi described these actions as clear violations of international law and acts of defiance, warning of continued threats to global peace and security from these actors.
Araghchi also lashed out at the three European countries’ misuse of the JCPOA dispute resolution mechanism and the UN Security Council to attempt reinstating the lifted resolutions against Iran — an effort that faced opposition from several Security Council members, including two permanent members. He labeled this move illegal and without legal effect.
Highlighting the expiration date of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 on October 18, 2025, Araghchi called on NAM member states to oppose any misuse of international institutions, especially the Security Council, for coercion or pressure against developing countries.
He further underlined that, given the lack of jurisdiction of the three European countries, their bad faith, and the explicit opposition of two permanent Security Council members, the claims by the U.S. and the three European countries on the reinstatement of 2015 resolutions under the JCPOA are void and should not be recognized as legally effective by any state.
On the issue of Palestine, Araghchi described it as one of the most critical international issues, stating that a solution is impossible without addressing its root cause — namely, the occupation and denial of the Palestinian people’s fundamental right to self-determination.
He affirmed the legitimate and legal right of the Palestinian people to continue their struggle for self-determination, highlighting the responsibility of all governments in this regard.
Araghchi emphasized that Iran supports all measures to stop the genocide of Palestinians, remove occupiers from Gaza, deliver humanitarian aid unhindered, and rebuild Gaza, while stressing the need to end impunity for the Israeli regime and prosecute those responsible for its crimes.
Finally, Araghchi underscored the importance of solidarity and support for NAM member countries facing unilateral and coercive actions by the United States, including Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, Belarus, and Iran.
