Gaza’s Deep Wounds: When a Ceasefire Doesn’t End the Nightmare

NOURNEWS – With the announcement of a ceasefire after a two-year war, Gaza stands amid its ruins—a land that has inherited an economy destroyed and a population scarred under Israeli bombardment and blockade.

Although the ceasefire following two years of relentless conflict has silenced the explosions, Gaza’s deep economic and human wounds continue to bleed. Two years of blockade and successive Israeli bombings have shattered the territory’s economic and social structure, leaving behind a resilient but exhausted population.

Official estimates place Gaza’s economic losses between $50 billion and $70 billion. More than 80% of critical infrastructure—including roads, buildings, and water and electricity networks—has been destroyed. Construction alone has suffered over $30 billion in damage, while the destruction of essential services such as water, healthcare, and education is estimated at around $40 billion.

Eighty-four percent of healthcare facilities are non-functional, and the health crisis has reached a catastrophic human scale. Unemployment has risen to 75%, and 49% inflation has pushed people’s livelihoods to the brink of collapse. More than 4.1 million people now live below the poverty line—citizens rising from the war’s ruins, yet still trapped under their adversary’s economic and psychological siege.

While the ceasefire has brought a renewed hope for Gaza’s reconstruction, these wounds will not heal until the blockade is fully lifted and Israel is held accountable for its economic and human crimes. Rebuilding Gaza is possible only by restoring the people’s right to life, dignity, and economic independence—people who, even amid ruins, continue to stand firm.
