Iran in consultation with China, Russia after snapback: spox

The Iranian foreign ministry spokesman says that Iran continues consultations with Russia and other Security Council members to counter the illegal move by three European states in triggering the snapback mechanism.

In response to a question from Mehr correspondent, Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesman for Iranian foreign ministry said in his regular press conference on Monday that "Consultations with Russia at various levels are continuing, and there is ongoing communication between the missions in New York."

He added that, "Russia, as a permanent member and rotating president of the Security Council, has made its position clear about the illegality of the three European countries’ actions."

The spokesman also said that "China and other members of the Security Council also oppose that action."

"Some countries have been forced to accept this action under increased pressure from the three European countries and the United States," Baghaei added.

"There are currently no [IAEA] inspections in Iran. The last inspections were at the Bushehr power plant were done at least 10 days ago. The decision on the future of inspections lies with the Supreme National Security Council."

The three major European powers France, Germany and the United Kingdom, who were participants in the Iran nuclear deal known as the JCPOA triggered the snapback mechanism to return the previous UN sanctions on Iran a few weeks ago. Iran, along with Russia and China considered their move illegitimate because they themselves never lived up to their commitments to the JCPOA after the illegal US withdrawal from te deal in 2018.
