FM Araghchi: Reinstating terminated UNSC resolutions would be ‘fatal blow to diplomacy’

Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has emphasized that reinstating the terminated UN Security Council resolutions would be “a fatal blow to diplomacy and the non-proliferation regime.”

Araghchi met with his South Korean counterpart, Cho Hyun, late on Thursday as part of his ongoing diplomatic consultations on the sidelines of the annual UN General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York.

Referring to the inappropriate and illegal action taken by three European countries to reinstate terminated Security Council resolutions against Tehran, the top Iranian diplomat reminded South Korea of its important responsibilities as the current President of the Security Council.

Araghchi urged all Security Council members to act responsibly to prevent the undermining of diplomatic processes through the abuse of the Security Council.

Furthermore, by explaining the initiatives and proposals put forward in recent weeks, including the understanding reached between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency () to facilitate interactions between Tehran and the Agency under the new circumstances, he considered the obstructionist actions of three European countries and the United States in advancing diplomacy as a continuation of their illegal and excessive demands over the past two decades.

The top Iranian diplomat stressed that reinstating the terminated Security Council resolutions would be a fatal blow to diplomacy and the non-proliferation regime, with unpredictable consequences, for which the instigators would be held responsible.

Araghchi expressed hope that the President of the Security Council and all members of this body, understanding their historical responsibility towards diplomacy, would prevent the illegal and unjustifiable action by a few member states to reinstate the Council’s terminated resolutions from 2015 against Iran.

For his part, the South Korean Foreign Minister highlighted his country’s commitment to supporting diplomatic efforts.

Referring to South Korea’s decision to abstain from voting on the proposed resolution by three European countries to extend the sanctions on Iran, he emphasized that South Korea would continue to fulfill its responsibilities as President of the Security Council with a professional and impartial approach.
