In a Telegram post on Saturday, Mikhail Ulyanov criticized the E3 for threatening Iran with the snapback of UN sanctions, saying the trio has not foreseen any strategy for getting out of the deadlock once the JCPOA mechanism was activated.
"Let’s put aside for a second legal and procedural issues which definitely don’t give the #E3 the right to do that. Let’s address the topic from purely political viewpoint. It is relevant to ask, if the E3 has exit strategy and a vision of how to find a way out if the deadlock they are going to create. The answers to these questions seem to be negative," Ulyanov wrote
The E3's threats to activate the snapback mechanism have already been met with harsh reactions from Iran, China, and Russia, as other signatories to the JCPOA.
Recently, Ulyanov said that the European countries have no legal right to restore sanctions on Iran as they continue to be in violation of the JCPOA and UN Security Council Resolution 2231
Iran has also repeatedly warned Europe about lacking the legal and moral authority to activate the mechanism, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stating that the E3 had effectively withdrawn from the JCPOA after the US pullout and with their recent postures, including by raising the issue of ‘zero enrichment’.
China has also said in a letter to the UN Security Council that it is firmly opposed to activating the snapback of sanctions against Iran.
