Envoy speaks out against IAEA double standards on Iran and Ukraine nuclear sites

Iran’s Ambassador to Moscow Kazem Jalali has criticized the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for applying double standards regarding attacks on nuclear facilities, comparing the agency’s response to the Zaporizhzhia plant during the Ukraine war with its silence over Israeli and US strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites.

In an interview with RT’s Rick Sanchez, Jalali said, “When attacks were made on Iranian nuclear facilities, the first body that should have asked why [such an attack was carried out] was the IAEA itself. But they didn’t.”

“Look at how the agency intervened when tensions started around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, saying it must protect the site from any attack. Why didn’t they act similarly when Iran was targeted?” he protested.

Jalali questioned whether there was any difference between nuclear sites belonging to members of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) “Yet we see the US, an NPT member, coordinating with a regime outside the NPT, Israel, to attack another NPT member. Isn’t that a contradiction?”

He called on international organizations to uphold their responsibilities and treat all countries equally under international law.

“We want to cooperate based on rules and principles that respect Iran’s rights, but the current double standards undermine trust,” he said.

The Iranian envoy described the Israeli-US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities as a clear violation of international law and criticized the global bodies for failing to respond appropriately.

Israel attacked Iran in an unprovoked act of aggression on June 13, assassinating military commanders and nuclear scientists in targeted strikes, and killing civilians in air raids on residential areas. On June 22, the United States also joined the war and bombed three Iranian nuclear sites. The war was halted on June 24 after the Tel Aviv regime requested a ceasefire following retaliatory missile strikes by Iran.
