In response to Trump’s imposition of hefty import tariffs on global trading partners earlier this year, China has escalated its engagement with regional countries.
Li said on Saturday that China and Indonesia both aim to promote “true multilateralism” in international relations.
Indonesia’s leader, for his part, pointed out that Jakarta views Beijing as an important partner in regard to developing industry and technology.
He also praised China for its stance in global affairs, commending Beijing’s leaders for standing up against “imperialism” and “colonialism.”
Li’s two-day visit to Indonesia came ahead of the Chinese premier’s trip to Kuala Lumpur to attend the 46th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.
ASEAN states foreign ministers met in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Sunday to explore new ways to counter the pressure caused by the trade war launched against them by Trump.
This year’s annual ASEAN Summit is hosted under Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship themed “Inclusive and Sustainable.”
Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan, opening a meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers, reiterated the economic bloc’s concerns about the US-China trade war.
“ASEAN nations are among those most heavily affected by the US-imposed tariffs. The US-China trade war is dramatically disrupting production and trade patterns worldwide. A global economic slowdown is likely to happen,” Mohamad said.
“We must seize this moment to deepen regional economic integration so that we can better shield our region from external shocks.”
Malaysia’s foreign minister called on member states to urgently strengthen regional economic integration and collective resilience amid intensifying global disruptions caused by Trump’s tariffs.
Mohamad said ASEAN member states are among the countries most affected by US-imposed tariffs.
He said ASEAN members need to seize the opportunity created by the occasion to continue promoting a model grounded in dialogue, cooperation, and multilateralism in dealing with an increasingly polarized world.
“We must think seriously about how we can constructively and positively contribute to global developments and evolution. This includes speaking out firmly as one voice on issues of peace, justice, equality, humanity, and international law,” he emphasized.
ASEAN leaders’ summit is scheduled for Monday. The ASEAN Summit is the highest policy-making body in Southeast Asian countries comprising Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
