Nournews: The Paris Conference, held on Feb. 13, 2025, was the third international conference organized with the aim of supporting the process of power transition in Syria. Contrary to the slogans in support of the people of Syria, the conference became a venue for displaying political rivalry and preserving the interests of regional and global players. Given that the humanitarian and economic crises in Syria have reached their peak, the Paris Conference failed to address the real needs of Syrians. In addition, the existing contradictions in the stance of the present countries reflected more complexity in the crisis in Syria as well as the absence of real determination to solve the crisis.
Inattention to the humanitarian and economic crises in Syria
Syria is facing a deep humanitarian, economic, and social crisis. However, no practical program was presented at the Paris Conference to help solve the problems. Particularly, the sanctions that have had very negative effects on the economy of Syria still persist. The participants were very inactive regarding the sanctions and only discussed them in the form of past statements. The lack of a concrete solution for helping the people in Syria has also raised serious questions about the real goals of organizing the event.
Political competition and interests that are not to the benefit of Syria
The presence of different countries with contradictory goals at the Paris Conference caused the conference to become an arena for the competition of regional and global powers instead of helping to solve the crisis in Syria. Countries such as France and some Arab nations, which support Assad’s opposition groups, undermined their credibility by taking contradictory stances on terrorism while backing groups such as Tahrir al-Shaam. As a result, the conference did not present any resolution for combating the humanitarian and political crises facing Syria.
Occupation and lack of determination to restore Syria’s total integrity
One of the concerning issues of the Paris Conference was the absence of discussions regarding the occupation by the Zionist regime and the presence of Turkish and American military forces in Syria. These issues, which have clearly affected the crisis in Syria, were excluded from the conference agenda. This has raised questions about the real aims of the participating countries in solving the Syrian crisis and restoring the total integrity of the country.
Continuation of the crisis or real change?
Considering the trend of past conferences and their limited results, it seems that the Paris Conference became more of a political display rather than a real step toward solving the Syrian crisis. The participating countries in the conference are more focused on their political and strategic interests than on solving the problems of Syrians. Because of that, it can be concluded that the Paris Conference has merely intensified the political race among global and regional countries rather than offering help to Syria.
