Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the IAEA, emphasized on November 12, the need for diplomatic solutions with Iran.
"The Iranian administration must understand that the international situation is becoming increasingly tense and that the margins to manoeuvre are beginning to shrink, and that it is imperative to find ways to reach diplomatic solutions," Rafael Grossi said at the COP29 climate summit in Baku.
Grossi is set to travel to Tehran in the coming days. He had previously described his trip as "important" and called for "substantial progress" on the joint statement of March 2023.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is allowed to carry out inspections in Iran, he said, but "we need to see more. Given the size, depth and ambition of Iran's programme, we need to find ways of giving the agency more visibility."
The IAEA Director General's trip comes after Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election was announced. Trump withdrew the US from the JCPOA in 2018.
"I already worked with the first Trump administration and we worked well together," the IAEA chief insisted.
Efforts to revive the JCPOA after the US withdrawal have so far been fruitless.
Grossi said about the JCPOA: "This agreement is an empty shell."
