UNSC committee fails to agree on Palestine's UN membership

A United Nations Security Council committee considering an application by the Palestinian Authority to become a full UN member was unable to make a unanimous recommendation in this regard.

The committee examining whether Palestine met the criteria could not reach a consensus, according to a report seen by Reuters on Tuesday.

Malta's Ambassador to the UN, Vanessa Frazier who is the rotating head of the 15-member council announced last Friday that the members of the special committee were unable to reach a consensus on giving Palestine a full membership in the United Nations.

She had referred the Palestinian Authority’s application for Palestine to become a full member of the world body to its membership committee.

Currently Palestine has a permanent observer status at the United Nations. Palestine applied for permanent membership in the United Nations in 2011 but later decided to remain as an observer for some time.

In April, Palestine sent a letter to the UN Security Council requesting that it reconsiders joining the UN as a permanent member.

Countries with permanent observer status can participate in most meetings and have access to almost all relevant documents, but do not have the right to vote. Other than Palestine, the Vatican also has permanent observer status at the United Nations.

Countries are admitted to the UN based on the recommendation from the Security Council and the decision by the General Assembly.
