NOURNEWS: Finally, one of the resolutions regarding Gaza managed to survive without being vetoed by the US. The United States, which had vetoed three proposed resolutions aimed at temporarily or permanently halting the military conflict in Gaza over the past 5 months, abstained from voting on a resolution drafted by the 10 non-permanent members of the UN Security Council. As a result, the UN Security Council ratified the "Ceasefire Resolution" in Gaza with 14 supportive votes.
According to reports, the resolution initially demanded an immediate ceasefire, but the United States conditions its abstention in this resolution on the removal of the suffix "permanent." The United States had earlier vetoed 3 UN Security Council Resolution on the matter. This delay led to the martyrdom of more than 32000 children, women and innocent citizens in Gaza, destructions in the coastal strip and the displacement of more than 1200000 Palestinians.
Also, the resolution demands the "immediate and unconditional" release of more than 100 Israeli captives and the provision of food, medical, and essential needs for Palestinians in Gaza.
Although the resolutions of the UN Security Council are legally binding, this resolution has been ignored in the past due to the limited executive mechanisms of the UN.
However, backed by the legal resolution, the council can impose more punitive measures against the Israeli regime.
Based on this, when Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, visited the Rafah border crossing a few days ago after the end of voting, he posted on X: "Failure would be unforgivable," emphasizing that "the resolution must be enforced."
Before the start of voting, the radio station affiliated with the Israeli regime announced that the planned trip of the national security advisor of the Israeli regime to Washington would be cancelled if the United States did not veto the resolution.
"Tzachi Hanegbi," the national security advisor of the Israeli regime and a close advisor to Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of the Zionist Regime, was scheduled to travel to Washington on Monday to discuss the invasion of Rafah with the United States. However, the meeting was cancelled after the voting.
Indirect negotiations between Hamas and the Zionist Regime are also underway in Doha. Although American and Israeli media outlets are trying to portray the negotiations as mainly focused on the release of Israeli captives by Hamas, the exchange of Israeli captives with Palestinian detainees in occupied lands is only part of the talks.
Based on that, Basem Naim, a senior official of Hamas, told CNN that apart from the release of Palestinian captives from Israeli prisons, there are still unresolved issues that remain.
Hamas had earlier put the withdrawal of the Zionist Regime from Gaza, the return of the People of Gaza to their homes, and the provision of food and sanitary aids to the citizens on the table as its preconditions.
The approach has also been reiterated by Basem Naim: "Negotiations are not only revolving around the exchange of prisoners. Israel has not agreed to any of Hamas's demands regarding a complete ceasefire, the withdrawal of all forces from Gaza, and even the gradual return of all displaced people to their homes."
The Zionist Regime's invasion to the resolution and Hamas's reception of it
Although the UN Security Council's resolution did not include the term 'permanent' and at the same time called for the 'unconditional release of Israeli captives by Hamas,' both the US and the Zionist Regime were dissatisfied with its ratification.
During the vote, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, criticized the proposed draft for not condemning Hamas and said that it is the reason why the US did not vote for it.
Gilad Erdan, the Zionist Regime Ambassador to the United Nations, also described the resolution as "shameful." Itamar Ben-Gvir, the Ministry of National Security of Israel, reacted to the UN Security Council's vote by saying, "The United Nations is a wasteland."
Hamas, however, welcomed the resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza in a statement and called for more pressure to be exerted on Israel so that it remains faithful to the resolution.
Emphasizing the need for achieving a sustainable ceasefire that leads to the exit of all military forces of the occupant regime from the Gaza Strip and the return of all displaced to their homes, Hamas declared, 'We emphasize our readiness to participate in the process of exchanging captives that leads to the release of captives from both sides. We also emphasize the importance of freedom of movement for Palestinians and their access to humanitarian aid, including having access to heavy equipment for removing debris so we can bury our martyrs who have been under ruins for months.
In the statement, Hamas has asked the UN Security Council to put “the occupants under pressure to remain faithful to the ceasefire and halt the genocidal war and ethnic cleansing against our people.'"
Hamas concluded the statement by saying, "We emphasize our people's right to establish an independent Palestinian nation with Quds as its capital, and to determine their destiny in accordance with international laws and resolutions."
Expressing hopes
Ursula von der Leyen, the head of the European Commission, welcomed the resolution and wrote on X that "Implementation of this resolution is vital for the protection of all civilians." Vasily Alekseyevich Nebenzya, the Russian ambassador to the United Nations, expressed dissatisfaction with changing "permanent" as the suffix of the ceasefire. However, he expressed hope that the Zionist Regime would remain faithful to the truce.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus," the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), also called for the immediate implementation of the recent resolution by posting on X.
Barbara Woodward," the UK Ambassador to the United Nations, expressed regret, like the United States, for not condemning Hamas in this resolution, but at the same time said: "We are calling for the immediate implementation of this resolution. This entails the formation of a new Palestinian state for the West Bank and Gaza, accompanied by an international support package." The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Foreign Affairs also stated in a declaration: "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia welcomes the issuance of the UN Security Council resolution for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the blessed month of Ramadan, which leads to a permanent and sustainable ceasefire and the release of all hostages.
