Some 17k children orphaned by Israeli war on Gaza: UNICEF

The spokesperson for the United Nation's Children's Fund (UNICEF) James Elder reported on the critical situation of 17,000 children in Gaza who have been orphaned due to the Zionist regime of Israel’s war on the enclave.

Elder said children in Gaza have been compelled to escape Israeli bombardments over and over during the past months, IRNA cited the London-based newspaper Raialyoum on Monday.

He said that children in Gaza eat only one meal per day under best circumstances.

UNICEF State of Palestine Chief of Communication Jonathan Crickx had told reporters in early February that extended families are distressed and face challenges to immediately take care of another child as they themselves are struggling to cater for their own children and family due to the sheer lack of food, water or shelter.

"Before this war, UNICEF was considering that more than 500,000 children were already in need of Mental Health and Psychosocial support in the Gaza Strip. Today, we estimate that almost all children are in need of MHPSS, more than 1 million children,” he added.

Nearly 29,000 people, including thousands of children and women, have been killed since the beginning of the war in Gaza in early October.
