Kanaani: IAEA chief’s anti-Iran demands lack legal basis

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has said that the Director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi is proposing requirements, which are not consistent with Iran’s commitments, as well as the provisions of the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.

NOURNEWS- Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has said that the Director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Rafael Grossi is proposing requirements, which are not consistent with Iran’s commitments, as well as the provisions of the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.

Kanaani said on Friday that Grossi’s demands are mostly the ones which have been proposed by the United States and three European states.

The IAEA chief unfortunately ignores the stipulated regulations of the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and pursues the demands of the US and the European trio, he said, arguing that such stance will tarnish the reputation of the UN nuclear watchdog.

Iran agreed upon the activities of 117 IAEA inspectors, but the director general tries to condition the implementation of safeguard agreement upon allowing certain inspectors’ mission in the country, which is a shocking move, he said.

The Islamic Republic has cooperated with the IAEA during its inspections so far; so, such attitude is considered biased and unprofessional, Kanaani added.

Despite the fact that Iran has had great cooperation with the IAEA, Grossi claimed that Tehran has held hostage the agency as a result of the country’s disputes with the West.
