NOURNEWS- A tripartite meeting of the Astana peace process concerning the situation in Syria has been held in the presence of foreign ministers from Iran, Russia, and Turkey.
The meeting among Iranian foreign ministers Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, his Turkish counterpart Hakan Fidan, and also Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov was hosted by the Islamic Republic of Iran on the sidelines of the 78th UN General Assembly in New York.
UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Otto Pedersen also joined the foreign ministers soon after the trilateral talks kicked off.
Amir-Abdollahian said in an interview with Iranian media in New York on Friday that in the Astana talks, which were hosted by Iran, the parties discussed the latest condition and issues faced by the people of Syria in the first round of the meeting.
In the second section, the foreign ministers consulted these issues with the UN special envoy for Syria.
In the meeting, the parties underlined that the economic woes, West-imposed sanctions, terrorism, and the presence of ISIS terrorist group are still major challenges in certain parts of Syria, he noted, adding that the foreign ministers asked the UN representative to propose an action plan and provide financial aid to create the essential infrastructure for the return of Syrian migrants and refugees to their homeland.
The Iranian foreign minister also said that simultaneously, solutions were suggested in a bid to ease misunderstandings as well as border disputes between Damascus and Ankara; so, we hope that we can resolve the remaining issues within the framework of the ongoing Astana Peace Process talks or in a quadrilateral format involving Iran, Syria, Russia, and Turkey in the near future.
