NOURNEWS- Referring to Doha’s role in the recent agreement between Iran and the US regarding the prisoner swap and the release of Iran’s frozen assets in South Korea, Iran’s ambassador to Qatar said, “Qatar has announced its readiness to play a bolder role between the two countries”.
In an interview, Iranian ambassador to Qatar Hamidreza Dehghan addressed Doha’s role in recent agreement between Iran and the US, saying, “Qatar has proposed to play a role regarding these issues over the past two years, and the Islamic Republic of Iran, based on the neighborhood policy pursued seriously by the 13th government, agreed to Qatar's proposal to play a role in this regard. Of course, some other countries in the region had also expressed readiness in this regard, and there was agreement with them as well”.
“During this period, many negotiations were conducted indirectly and through Qatar's mediation in this regard,” he added.
Noting that finally, after lengthy negotiations, the exchange of prisoners between Iran and the US happened on Monday, Dehghani said “The prisoner sway was part of the agreement, and another part of it, was the release of about $6 billion of Iran's assets in South Korean banks, which were transferred from South Korea to Europe and then to Qatar”.
Answering a question that whether it is possible that Qatar to play such a role in other cases in the future, the ambassador said, “Qatar has always announced its readiness to play a role in this relation. And as mentioned earlier, this requires us to conclude that negotiations are beneficial and not just for negotiation”.
In the end, Dehghani appreciated the role of high-ranking officials in Qatar and Iran in the implementation of this agreement.
