The differences and distinctions between G20 and BRICS

The positions and performance of the members states of BRICS during their recent meeting showed a nationwide consensus among them regarding the elimination of economic crises and discrimination in the international system, convergence, etc., on the contrary; The meeting of the G20 was not only not accompanied by consensus and convergence, but from the very beginning, differences were officially made public.

NOURNEWS- The G20 summit includes the EU, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, Britain, and the US, this bloc’s meeting was held last week in New Delhi.

Before that, the meeting of the BRICS group including India, South Africa, Russia, China, and Brazil was held in South Africa along with representatives from dozens of countries.

Examining the text and margins of these two meetings reveals new dimensions of the new world order:

First; The positions and performance of the member states of BRICS and their meeting expressed a nationwide consensus among them regarding the elimination of economic crises and discrimination in the international system, the convergence, and development of bilateral and multilateral relations, and the expansion of the scope of this convergence to other countries.

In return; The meeting of the G20 was not only not accompanied by consensus and convergence, but from the very beginning of the New Delhi meeting, it was officially announced that there were differences and the meeting's goals were not achieved. The differences were so obvious that Charles Michel, the president of European council, said at the start of the meeting: it is hard to imagine that the countries participating in the G20 meeting in New Delhi will reach any mutual statement and convergence.

In the context of these disputes, while accusing China, Britain’s PM, Rishi Sunak, announced that the G20 countries are currently unable to reach an agreement regarding the climate issue and the Ukraine crisis.

The meeting of the G20 did not even end with taking a common souvenir photo, and the depth of the differences was such that the members could not cover it up, and could not even hide their defenses for a moment just in order to maintain their appearance and speak of unity and not face each other.

Second; What was stated in the BRICS meeting and its final statement was derived from pacifist approaches, ending wars and crises, putting aside discriminatory behaviors and accepting the principle of dialogue and the rights of countries, including in the nuclear field.

In the meeting of the G20, however, due to the positions of the southern countries such as Russia, India, Brazil, China, and South Africa, the final statement had a balanced approach, and topics such as unilaterally condemning Russia on the pretext of the Ukraine war were avoided, and in some paragraphs, was emphasized on negotiating and discourse approach, but the positions raised in the speeches as well as the practical behavior of the Western members of the G20 have revealed the non-peaceful and crisis-causing nature of these countries.

It is noteworthy that this confrontational approach of the Western members of the G20 with world peace and security continued even after the meeting, as Canada’s PM, Justin Trudeau, claimed in his warmongering words after the meeting of the G20 and said: if it were up to me to adjust the content of the G20 statement on Russia's war in Ukraine, I would have issued it much stronger.

Third; In its recent meeting, the BRICS group emphasized on the principle of global convergence, changes in global economic relations, the need to use local currencies in international trade and financial exchanges, and the commitment to support free and transparent global trade based on rules, and in this framework, BRICS announced 6 countries of Iran, Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates as this bloc’s new members, furthermore, BRICS leaders stated that they are ready to accept the membership request of other countries that have volunteered for membership.

However, the meeting of the G20 showed the continuation of Western unilateralism and their one-sided approach for dealing with global changes in the formation of a new order and healthy economic interactions.

The point is; Such unilateral and selfish approaches of the Western countries have faced a new obstacle called BRICS (countries of global south) in the G20 meeting, a process that indicates the decline of the military, political and economic power of the West to impose its demands and will on other countries.
