The position of Tehran-Riyadh relations in the 2030 vision of MBS

After signing the agreement on the normalization of relations in March of last year, Iran and Saudi Arabia have entered a new round of comprehensive relations, the basis of which is to move away from geopolitical competition and move towards Geo-Economic cooperation.

NOURNEWS- Shortly after the arrival of Alireza Enayati, the new ambassador of Iran in Riyadh, Abdullah bin Saud Al-Anazi, the new ambassador of Saudi Arabia in Tehran, arrived in Tehran and said: The Saudi vision document for 2030 announced by the crown prince of this country, Mohammed bin Salman, can be a road map to strengthen the cooperation and strategic goals of the said two countries.

Al-Anazi added: The orders of the leaders of Saudi Arabia emphasizes on the importance of strengthening the relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Iran, and we hope that we can bring these relations to brighter horizons so that they can move forward with each other in the interests of the two friendly and brotherly nations.

This senior Saudi diplomat also said: Saudi Arabia and Iran are two neighboring countries with economic components, natural resources and many advantages that can help to promote the aspects of development and prosperity, stability and security in the region for the benefit of two countries and two brotherly nations.

Examining the record of Bin Salman's activities in recent years in the framework of the Vision 2030 document, which was announced in 2016 as the country's development roadmap, shows plans to reduce Riyadh's dependence on oil and diversify the Saudi economy and develop service sectors.

Bin Salman's initial point of support in this direction was the investment, technical and security support of the West, but Saudi Arabia's involvement in regional security crises and deep spending voids, including the Yemen war, made the Saudi crown prince change his course.

To describe it more precisely; The West not only did not provide the security required for the realization of this vision document for Riyadh, but also created many crises and security challenges which imposed heavy costs on Saudi Arabia itself.

In addition, the shameful withdrawal of America from Afghanistan and then the developments of the war in Ukraine revealed the unreliability of the West to many of its allies, including Saudi Arabia, leading them to the important conclusion that unilateral relations with the West does not answer their needs and solve their problems.

Accordingly, although Saudi Arabia has maintained its interactions with the West, it is looking for new dimensions of regional and global diplomacy with a multilateral perspective, which is reflected in the increase in orientation towards China and Russia and the change in Saudi Arabia’s approach towards Iran.

Although the Persian-language opposition media outlets have struggled a lot in recent months to de-emphasize the revival of Iran-Saudi relations, the truth of the matter is that the emphasis on Iran's role in the Saudi 2030 vision document expresses several basic points:

First; While considering that the 2030 document is a strategic document and not a temporary one, paying attention to Iran's role in the realization of this roadmap, expresses Riyadh's strategic view on its relations with Iran and the many capacities that will be realized in the development of relations for the parties, as MBS also said in his recent meeting with Iran’s FM, the latter officially emphasized the strategic nature of these relations with Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Second; Any economic activity, especially in the field of infrastructure, requires an important component called "security". On the other hand; The West has always tried to prevent stable security in West Asia and the region's enjoyment of common capacities and resources by proposing false and deviant issues such as Shia and Sunni and other religious subjects, Arab and non-Ajam, etc. Therefore, one of the important requirements for the realization of the development goals of the countries in the region is an effort to create stability and confront the incitements and anti-security divisions of the West regarding the West Asia.

Third; The inclusion of Riyadh's relations with Tehran in the Saudi strategic document, on the one hand, expresses the acknowledgment of Iran's role and position in the future world order, which places it in the ranks of large countries such as member states of BRICS (China, Russia, India, South Africa and Brazil) and on the other hand; It also shows the falsity of the West's claim regarding the isolation of Iran and the effectiveness of illegal imposed sanctions against Iran.

Fourth; After signing the agreement on the normalization of relations in March of last year, Iran and Saudi Arabia have entered a new round of comprehensive relations, the basis of which is to move away from geopolitical competition and move towards Geo-Economic cooperation. The opportunities that will be available to the two countries and the West Asian region through this route will direct the regional capacities towards economic development with a sharp reduction in security costs, and will form the basis for the formation of new cooperation between the powers of West Asia and other countries which has turned out that their interests are in conflict with the continuation of insecurity in the region, and they support stability and peace.
