Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi are among the heads of state meeting in Kyrgyzstan on Monday for the 26th SCO Summit.

The two-day summit’s theme is “25 years of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization: together for peace, development and shared prosperity.”

The Bishkek summit will focus on economic cooperation, connectivity, energy, digital development, counter-terrorism, and regional security.

Pezeshkian is scheduled to deliver a speech at the SCO summit. On the sidelines of the summit, he will hold bilateral meetings with heads of state and senior officials from the organization’s member and partner states.

Pezeshkian is scheduled to hold talks with Putin on Tuesday.

Iran, now six months into US-Israeli aggression against the Islamic Republic, and Russia, which has been fighting for more than four years against Ukrainian forces backed by the US-led West, see the summit as an important platform for strengthening ties among non-Western countries.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was established in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, evolving from the Shanghai Five. India and Pakistan joined in 2017, followed by Iran in 2023 and Belarus in 2024, bringing the organization’s membership to 10 countries.

The SCO is now the world’s largest regional organization by geographic scope and population, covering roughly 24 percent of the world’s land area and representing 42 percent of the global population.

Pezeshkian is also expected to attend the official opening ceremony of the 2026 World Nomad Games set in Kyrgyzstan.
