Hossein Forouzan, secretary of Iran’s Supreme Council of Free Trade-Industrial and Special Economic Zones, made the remarks during a visit to Khoy on Saturday, highlighting the city’s significant border, economic and transportation potential.

Forouzan said the proposed joint free zone has entered the legal process following negotiations between the two countries, adding that the Iranian government has also approved the project. He said implementation will proceed under a bilateral memorandum of understanding.

He emphasized the strategic importance of the Razi border crossing, describing it as a major route for trade between Iran and Turkey. He said developing the area’s supporting infrastructure and establishing a logistics hinterland are essential for expanding commercial activity.

During his visit, Forouzan reviewed plans for a 50-hectare site in Ivughli designated for customs facilities and a logistics hinterland. He also visited Khoy’s industrial and transportation facilities, including its airport.

The official said the proposed joint free zone would complement existing economic capacities in West Azarbaijan Province rather than weaken other free zones.

Khoy Governor Ali Alaei said the city’s road, rail, air and customs infrastructure provides strong potential for expanding economic exchanges with Turkey. He also highlighted the Razi border, Khoy airport and logistics facilities as key assets for regional development.
