Why Did Multimillion-Dollar Missiles Reach the End of the Line?

A new report by the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) has exposed a serious crisis in the U.S. military’s weapons and air-defense missile stockpiles. The war with Iran was not merely a test of America’s firepower; it also laid bare a critical weakness in one of the Pentagon’s key pillars: the depth of its weapons reserves and its ability to rapidly replenish advanced missiles and interceptors.

In recent months, numerous reports from U.S. media outlets and think tanks have pointed to declining stocks of air-defense missiles, long-range missiles and precision-guided munitions.

Recent disclosures by reputable Western military and strategic sources paint a different picture of the U.S. military’s ability to sustain its logistics in missile warfare. Defense One, a specialized defense publication, has examined the Pentagon’s stockpiles and precision-guided munitions in detail, reporting that U.S. missile-defense reserves and precision weapons have come under severe pressure—not only in well-known air-defense systems such as Patriot and THAAD, but also in air-to-ground weapons carried by fifth-generation fighter aircraft such as the F-35 and F-22.

The issue, however, is not limited to a single type of missile. Published assessments of the U.S. weapons inventory indicate that the greatest pressure has been placed on a range of air-defense interceptors, long-range missiles and precision-guided munitions—systems that are extremely expensive and time-consuming to manufacture.

From Patriot and THAAD to Long-Range Missiles: U.S. Stockpiles Under Wartime Pressure

One of the clearest signs of the problem is the decline in U.S. air-defense missile stocks. In an analysis published on July 27, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimated that the U.S. Patriot inventory had fallen to fewer than 1,000 interceptors, while THAAD stocks had dropped to around 250 interceptors. The center warned that declining inventories could force the United States and its allies to take greater risks in how they allocate interceptors if the war resumes.

Other reports have painted a similar picture. The Associated Press, citing published analyses, reported that stocks of Patriot and THAAD interceptors had fallen significantly during the war, prompting the Pentagon to ask weapons manufacturers to submit plans for rapidly expanding production.

The significance of the issue lies in the high cost of each interceptor and the limited capacity to produce them. Unlike basic ammunition, advanced air-defense missiles are highly complex systems that rely on intricate supply chains, specialized components and multi-stage manufacturing processes. As a result, a sudden surge in demand does not necessarily translate into an immediate increase in supply.

Meanwhile, the crisis is not confined to missile defense. Reuters reported on August 4 that the U.S. military had used up nearly all of its stockpiles of some long-range precision missiles during the war with Iran, while declining inventories of systems such as ATACMS and PrSM have raised concerns about America’s readiness for future conflicts.

This is particularly significant because the U.S. military must simultaneously maintain weapons capacity for several strategic theaters, including the Middle East, Europe and East Asia. Every missile used in one war, therefore, is not necessarily a cost confined to that conflict; it can also affect U.S. deterrence capabilities in other regions.

Defense One focuses precisely on this issue. The publication says that efforts by defense contractors to develop cheaper munitions, along with the Pentagon’s decision to award new contracts, cannot resolve the short-term shortage of stockpiles caused by the war with Iran.

Pentagon Miscalculations: From the Ukraine Crisis to Astronomical Weapons Costs

According to the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency, the roots of the crisis can be traced to a chain of operational decisions and miscalculations made in recent years. Since 2023, the Pentagon has sent a large share of its Patriot systems and missiles to Ukraine in support of Kyiv, without first establishing the infrastructure needed for rapid replenishment. At the same time, as part of efforts to modernize and upgrade missile capabilities to newer generations through Lockheed Martin, a significant portion of initial stockpiles was also allocated to NATO members through military contracts.

These changes came as the soaring cost of new missiles made immediate replacement virtually impossible:

Patriot missile: approximately $3.5 million to $4.5 million per interceptor
THAAD high-altitude air-defense missile: approximately $6.5 million to $9.9 million per interceptor
Naval ballistic-missile defense interceptors such as RIM and MIM systems: approximately $8 million to $12.5 million per missile

Beyond their astronomical price tags, the production cycle for these missiles is highly complex due to the use of advanced titanium alloys, high-performance polymers and thousands of electronic components and satellite-linked sensors. As a result, mass production of each batch of these weapons can take three to five years, while Washington’s defense industry lacks the capacity to dramatically ramp up output in the short term.

 

Why Will Rebuilding America’s Arsenal Take Years?

The fundamental problem for the Pentagon is not simply the number of missiles fired; the bigger challenge is how quickly those missiles can be replaced.

In another analysis published in April 2026, CSIS wrote that concerns over U.S. munitions stockpiles had grown following the extensive use of Tomahawk missiles, Patriots and other weapons during the war with Iran. At the same time, the center stressed that, under plausible scenarios involving the continuation of the same war, the United States had not necessarily reached the point of “running out of ammunition altogether.” The primary concern was the impact of depleted stockpiles on future conflicts.

That distinction is crucial. The claim that “the U.S. has run out of missiles” is not supported by the available data. However, the fact that the depth of some critical weapons stockpiles has declined and that rebuilding those inventories will take time is consistent with multiple reports from U.S. sources.

The Project On Government Oversight (POGO) also reported on U.S. munitions, noting that even if military operations were considered successful in terms of their stated objectives, the cost in terms of stockpile depth and the four-to-seven years required to replace some expended munitions could be substantial.

The Pentagon has also been pursuing efforts to expand production capacity in response. Reuters, for example, reported that Lockheed Martin received major contracts in 2026 to increase production of systems such as THAAD and Precision Strike missiles. The move underscores the seriousness with which the issue of replenishing U.S. stockpiles is being treated at the highest levels of the country’s military and defense industry.

Defense One has likewise reported on efforts by defense contractors to develop cheaper versions of interceptors and munitions, while warning that even new contracts cannot immediately make up the shortfall.

In reality, building a new factory or expanding production lines does not mean that thousands of missiles can be delivered immediately. Sourcing components, training skilled workers, testing, quality control and operational certification all take time. As a result, the gap between wartime consumption and industrial replenishment can persist for years.

From this perspective, the war with Iran has delivered an important lesson for the Pentagon: an armed force designed around limited wars and short-term operations faces an entirely different challenge when confronted with a prolonged conflict that consumes large quantities of expensive missiles.

That does not mean the collapse of U.S. military power or the end of America’s operational capacity. The United States still has one of the world’s largest defense industries and has allocated billions of dollars to expanding munitions production. But the experience of the war with Iran has shown that even the world’s largest arsenal faces industrial and logistical constraints in the face of a prolonged, high-consumption conflict.

Ultimately, what is emerging from reports by Defense One, CSIS, Reuters and other U.S. sources is not that the “U.S. has run out of missiles,” but rather that the depth of some critical weapons stockpiles has declined and that rapidly replenishing them is difficult. That could complicate Washington’s calculations over whether to pursue a war of attrition while simultaneously maintaining readiness to confront China, Russia and other potential threats.
